San Francisco Artist Moonyoung Sung addresses the increase in the number of abandoned animals through her portraits of neglected dogs. She uses discarded cardboard as a surface to metaphorically call attention to our throwaway culture and the increase in animal cruelty.
She says, “People have deep psychological bonds with their companion animals. As a family, we rely on each other mentally and physically. There is now a large amount of data confirming that pets are good for your psychological health and may increase, not only the quality of your life, but also your longevity. Ironically, instead of seeing a decrease in the number of abandoned animals, we see the opposite, especially in Korea.
Moonyoung received an M.F.A. in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute and an M.F.A. in Korean Painting and a B.F.A. in Korean Painting and Art History from Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea.
