New Mexico artist Alexis Kaminsky builds custom memory boxes from image and story. The boxes provide a safe place to store tokens of memory–a collar, tags, a favorite toy. For Sheltered, Alexis built “Angel Dog,” a tribute to dog-obsessed dogs everywhere. If you are interested in a custom memory or tribute box, further information is available on artist’s website. Be sure to note that you heard about these beautiful boxes through Sheltered. Alexis is generously donating 50% of all commissioned boxes that are ordered from viewing at Sheltered from Oct 10-Nov 14 to Sheltered. Thank you, Alexis! A little about Alexis: She started working with clay about 20 years ago as part of healing from brain surgery. For many years, she spent more time away from it than not. That changed in 2013 when she decided to follow her passion. She says, “I like where art-making takes me. Running up against physics, the limitations of materials, the limits of my own skill and knowledge–I’m particularly taken with sculpture.” She works in series exploring variation in and relations between tone, texture, and expression.
